New Look, Same Great Taste















I bought a box of cereal the other day. It said "New Look, Same great taste." That describes the mince pie I tried to assemble this week.

Keep in mind the inherent simplicity of my assignment:
(1)Unroll two store-bought pie crusts.
(2) Put one into pie plate (to be the bottom of this 2-crust pie.
(3) Pour in full jar of None Such Mince Pie Filling.
(4) Lay remaining pie crust on top of pie, and crimp edges.
(5) Bake in 350 oven for 40 or so minutes.

Then Voilà! Hot mince pie, absent the superficial presentation touches. We'll address the presentation aspect of pastry art in a future post, possibly.

In the meantime, it's safe to say, you rarely see mince pie like this one. But trust me, Same great taste!

Wow, dad. That looks...um...yummy. Actually, if it wasn't filled with mince pie, I'm sure I'd like it just fine. We'll work on your presentation skills though, just in case.

what IS mince anyway? Like "fruit meats?" or something like that? What are fruit meats? I'll stick with pecan. or pumpkin. Or chicken pot.

LOL when I saw the picture of the pie...but what a great attitude you have!!! Then again, we eat cake out of garbage cans, right?!

Spring in a bottle

Sal and I both like tulips, so while winter still has a loose grip on Minnesota, we're enjoying some "bottled freshness". I remember planting tulip bulbs with my Mom when I was a kid growing up in Massachsetts I can still recall the frangrance of the bone meal that we always poured into the hole before pressing the bulb gently into place. Nana and I love going with very long-time friends Steve and Pam to their wonderful old Eagle River, Wisconsin cabin, about 250 miles from our MN home. The four of us generally drive up in one car. Signature Desserts

Inspired by the great cooking done by my wife and three daughters , and daughter-in-law, I knew it was time for me to do as they do, which is, (1) make a delicious something, (2) take a sumptuous-looking photograph of it, and (3) upload it to my blog for all the world to enjoy vicariously. This would not be difficult for me, as I like to bake from a box, and I like to take pictures. So since it's Friday (every day is Friday in my world) I rolled up my sleeves and got started, noting without alarm that the sell-by date was 4 years ago, seriously. My choice dessert for this project was the Boston Cream Pie, which honors my New England roots, of course. So let's go.
